The Schumann Resonance

What it is

Between the surface of the Earth and the ionosphere, the charged layer of the upper atmosphere, there is a vast shell of air. Lightning, which strikes somewhere on the planet many times every second, sends electromagnetic waves racing around inside that shell. Waves of certain lengths fit the circumference of the Earth just right and reinforce each other. Those are the Schumann resonances. The deepest sits near 7.83 Hz, with higher ones near 14.3, 20.8, 27.3 and 33.8 Hz.

These are electromagnetic waves, not sound, and 7.83 Hz is also far below what human ears can hear. DIVINE Sound carries it a different way: as a slow pulse, a gentle swell and fade at that rate, woven through the baths it composes from your chart. You don't hear 7.83 Hz as a pitch. You feel it as the rhythm the other tones breathe to.

Where it comes from

The resonances are named for Winfried Otto Schumann, the German physicist who predicted them in the 1950s by working out how the space between the ground and the ionosphere should behave. They were later measured, and they are now a well-established part of atmospheric physics, used to study lightning and the upper atmosphere around the world. In sound baths and meditation, 7.83 Hz has become a symbol of the Earth itself: a reminder of the planet you lie on while you listen.

Listening

Listen to a DIVINE Sound bath and, instead of following the tones, follow the pulse beneath them: the slow swell and release that repeats through the whole bath. Let your attention ride it the way you might ride the rise and fall of waves. Notice whether your breath begins to find its own rhythm alongside it. There's nothing to match. It's simply the Earth's pulse, carried into the room.
