What Is a Sound Bath?

A sound bath is a stretch of time spent lying still while tones wash over you.

What it is

In a sound bath you lie down, close your eyes and let sound do the moving. A practitioner plays singing bowls, gongs, chimes, drums or their own voice, one layer at a time, so the room fills with long tones that overlap and fade. You don't sing, follow a script or try to relax. You listen. Most baths run from twenty minutes to an hour, and many people describe the experience as a kind of waking rest, somewhere between listening and dreaming.

DIVINE Sound makes a sound bath from your birth chart. It reads where each planet sat when you were born and gives each one its tone from the Cosmic Octave, then layers those tones with the chakra and Solfeggio tones they pair with and a slow pulse at the Earth's 7.83 Hz resonance. The planets that are strongest in your chart become the loudest voices, so no two baths sound alike.

Where it comes from

People have gathered around sound for as long as there have been instruments: chanting, drumming, the bells and bowls of temples and monasteries. The sound bath as a named practice is much newer. It grew out of that long history and took its current shape in the late twentieth century, with Himalayan singing bowls, gongs and crystal bowls at its center. It is a contemplative practice, not a medical one. What it offers is time, stillness and attention, and the tones are the way in.

Listening

Find a place where you can lie down undisturbed for twenty minutes or more. Use headphones, or a speaker you can feel as well as hear. Cover yourself with a blanket, because stillness makes the body cool. Close your eyes and let the first tone begin. When your mind wanders, and it will, return to the sound. When the bath ends, stay where you are for a few breaths before you move.

DIVINE Sound turns your birth chart into a sound bath: your planets’ tones, woven together.
