What Gate 42 means

Gate 42 is the gate of increase, but not the kind that comes from piling up more. It's the increase that comes from finishing. When a cycle is brought all the way to its end, something is gained that can't be gained any other way: the lesson, the harvest, the room for what comes next.

This gate sits in the Sacral Center, the body's source of life force and sustainable energy, so the urge to complete is physical as much as mental. You feel an open loop in your body. Paired with Gate 53 in the Root, the gate of beginnings, it forms the Channel of Maturation: the full arc from a fresh start to a ripe, finished end, taken in the right order.

The six lines of Gate 42

Every gate has six lines, and your chart shows which one you carry. The line colors how the gate plays out in you.

• Line 1 (the Investigator) closes cycles from understanding. Your endings are clean because you've studied what real completion requires, and you know the difference between finished and abandoned. Just don't let the studying become a reason to delay the close.
• Line 2 (the Hermit) finishes best after time alone. Your sense of how and when to close something gets clear in solitude, so step away before a big ending instead of deciding in the middle of the noise.
• Line 3 (the Martyr) learns completion by leaving cycles open. You've had chapters that never quite ended and felt them grind on you, and each one taught you what a real ending needs. Use that knowledge to finish differently now.
• Line 4 (the Opportunist) completes with your people around you. Your important endings go better when friends, family or colleagues are part of them, so let your network hold you through the close.
• Line 5 (the Heretic) draws other people's unfinished business. People may expect you to wrap things up for them, at work, in the family, in the community. Close your own cycles too, and choose which of theirs are yours to finish.
• Line 6 (the Role Model) matures over a lifetime. Early endings may be rushed or forced, then comes a long stretch of watching how cycles really unfold, and later you return as someone whose sense of timing others trust.

The Sun moves through Gate 42 every year from about April 10 to April 16 (the dates shift by a day or so from year to year). For those days its theme is in the air for everyone, whether or not it's in your chart.
