What the Heart chakra is

The Heart chakra sits in the middle of the chest, the fourth of the seven and the midpoint between the three centers below and the three above. Its Sanskrit name, Anahata, means "unstruck," a sound that rings without anything striking it. In the chakra tradition it is the center of love, tenderness and connection: how you open to others and let them in. Its tone in modern sound work is 639 Hz.

Where the number comes from

The chakras come from Indian yogic and tantric traditions, which map the body as a column of centers rising along the spine. In those traditions the Heart center is linked with air, and its name points to an inner sound that is heard rather than made. Pairing each chakra with one of the Solfeggio tones (396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz) is a modern sound-bath practice, not part of the old yogic texts. 639 Hz carries the Solfeggio name Connection. Sound healers often use it in partner work and group baths.

Listening

Lie down and rest one hand over the center of your chest. Let the 639 Hz tone play softly. Think of someone you love, or a place you love, and simply hold them in mind while you listen. You don't need to picture them clearly. Notice whether the tone seems to sit in your chest or around you. Stay as long as it feels kind.
