The Tone of Venus

What Venus's tone is

In the Cosmic Octave, every planet has a tone of its own, found by taking the length of its orbit and doubling its frequency, octave after octave, until it lands in a range we can hear. Venus takes about 225 days to circle the Sun. Carried up into hearing, that slow rhythm becomes 221.23 Hz, a warm tone a hair above the A below middle C.

Venus is the planet of love, beauty, pleasure and value: what you're drawn to, what you find lovely, what you'd keep. Her tone is often described as soft, open and sweet, a sound that asks nothing of you and makes room for what you already feel.

Where the number comes from

The Cosmic Octave was worked out by the Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto in the late 1970s. It isn't a mystical assignment: it's arithmetic applied to the real orbit of each planet. What people make of the tones is where the tradition begins. Listening

Many people use the Venus tone at the start of a session, to soften, or when they want to come back to what they love after a hard stretch. Try it with your eyes closed and one hand resting over your chest. Notice where you feel it. There's nothing to do and nothing to get right: the practice is simply listening.
