The Tone of Pluto

What Pluto's tone is

In the Cosmic Octave, every planet has a tone of its own, found by taking the length of its orbit and doubling its frequency, octave after octave, until it lands in a range we can hear. Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the Sun. Carried up into hearing, that immense rhythm becomes 140.25 Hz, a deep tone a little above the C sharp below middle C.

Pluto is the planet of depth, power and transformation: what lies beneath the surface, what has to end so something truer can begin, the strength you find when you stop avoiding. Its tone is often described as dark and dense, a sound that seems to draw you inward and down.

Where the number comes from

The Cosmic Octave was worked out by the Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto in the late 1970s. It isn't a mystical assignment: it's arithmetic applied to the real orbit of each planet. What people make of the tones is where the tradition begins. Listening

Many people use the Pluto tone when something is ending or changing and they want to meet it rather than run. Try it sitting low, hands resting on your thighs, eyes closed. Let the tone settle into the base of your body. Notice what you've been holding. The practice is simply listening.
