The Tone of Mercury

What Mercury's tone is

In the Cosmic Octave, every planet has a tone of its own, found by taking the length of its orbit and doubling its frequency, octave after octave, until it lands in a range we can hear. Mercury takes about 88 days to circle the Sun, the quickest orbit of all. Carried up into hearing, that rhythm becomes 141.27 Hz, a clear tone a little above the C sharp below middle C.

Mercury is the planet of thought, speech, learning and connection: how you listen, how you explain, how you move between ideas and people. Its tone is often described as light and alert, a sound that seems to sharpen the edges of your attention.

Where the number comes from

The Cosmic Octave was worked out by the Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto in the late 1970s. It isn't a mystical assignment: it's arithmetic applied to the real orbit of each planet. What people make of the tones is where the tradition begins. Listening

Many people use the Mercury tone before writing, speaking or studying, when they want their thoughts to line up. Try humming quietly along with it for a minute, then stop and simply listen. Notice where you feel it in your throat and jaw. There's nothing to get right: the practice is simply listening.
