What the Earth Year tone is

In the Cosmic Octave, every planet has a tone of its own, found by taking the length of its orbit and doubling its frequency, octave after octave, until it lands in a range we can hear. The Earth takes one year, about 365 and a quarter days, to circle the Sun. Carried up into hearing, that rhythm becomes 136.10 Hz, a warm, low tone a little under the C sharp below middle C, with a deeper octave at 68.05 Hz.

In a chart, the Earth sits directly opposite your Sun, the ground you stand on while the sky turns. Its tone is often described as warm, steady and full, the kind of sound that seems to lower your center of gravity.

Where the number comes from

The Earth year tone comes from the Cosmic Octave of the Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto, worked out in the late 1970s by applying arithmetic to the real length of the year. At 136.10 Hz, it's widely called the OM tone, and many musicians tune instruments, gongs and bowls to it. Sound healers pair it with the root center, and DIVINE Sound pairs it with the Solfeggio tone of 174 Hz, which tradition links with foundation.

Listening

Many people open or close a session with the Earth tone, or chant OM along with it. Try it sitting on the floor, or with bare feet on the ground. Let your exhale be long and slow, and feel the tone in your hips and legs. Notice where you feel held. There's nothing to get right: the practice is simply listening.
