The Tone of Mars

What Mars's tone is

In the Cosmic Octave, every planet has a tone of its own, found by taking the length of its orbit and doubling its frequency, octave after octave, until it lands in a range we can hear. Mars takes about 687 days, a little under two years, to circle the Sun. Carried up into hearing, that rhythm becomes 144.72 Hz, a strong tone just under the D below middle C.

Mars is the planet of energy, desire, courage and action: what you go after, how you stand up for yourself, how you meet a challenge. Its tone is often described as warm and forward, a sound that seems to gather you and point you somewhere.

Where the number comes from

The Cosmic Octave was worked out by the Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto in the late 1970s. It isn't a mystical assignment: it's arithmetic applied to the real orbit of each planet. What people make of the tones is where the tradition begins. Listening

Many people use the Mars tone when they feel stuck or flat and want to get moving. Try it standing, feet planted, knees soft. Let your arms hang loose and feel the tone in your belly and chest. You might sway or shift your weight. There's nothing to push for: the practice is simply listening.
